Empirix e-Tester is an automated testing tool that is part of the e-TEST suite of applications.  E-Tester gives users the capability to create automated functional test scripts.  It is designed to be used to test web, wireless, and streaming media applications.  A user begins generating a script by using e-Tester to record their interaction with the application being tested.  E-Tester records all objects on each web page that is viewed, and validates these objects when the script is executed.  The script can be customized to use values from data files as test inputs.  Empirix claims that usable test scripts can be created without any coding whatsoever.  Ease of use is one of this product’s key features.  However, to extend the functionality of recorded scripts, users can utilize Visual Basic for Applications (VBA).  E-Tester utilizes the VBA development environment to provide advanced users with test script debugging features and the ability to create reusable functions.  C++, J++, VBScript, and JavaScript can also be used to enhance e-Tester scripts.  Test scripts created with e-Tester can also be used to conducting performance testing in Empirix e-Load.  In addition, E-Tester integrates with e-Manager, Empirix’s test management tool.

Comments: Doesn't work well with anything other than web. Takes protocol based approach which doesn't really test the underlying app. There's a reason this tool failed and was bought by Oracle.

Comments: I found e-tester is not very useful like WinRunner since i have been testing the application for over 2 years

Comments: I found e-Tester easy to use since I have been programming in VB for several years now, and so I was able to jump right in and figure out how to use the tool to do what I needed it to.

Comments: A pretty straightforward tool - I was able to use it effectively within a day of installing it - meaning that the learning curve is not too steep if you have any previous ex[perience with test automation. Newbies may require several days, but not mcuh more than that.

Comments: Great for testing J2EE applications. I can create complex scripts in a short amount of time. The automatic insertion of checkpoint is especially useful. Haven't tried to use it to test any .NET apps, but according to what I've heard, it works well with that technology too.

Comments: Ease of use is e-Tester's main advantage. This is no small thing when it comes to test automation tools. The cost is reasonable also, in contrast to other tools from the more well-known vendors.

Comments: not very useful for legacy client-server applications, so it doesn;t have the flexbility of a tool like winrunner that can be used to test both newer web applications and older legacy apps.

Comments: Helps to have some programming experience if you want to create complex scripts. novice users will be able to create basic, point-and-click test scripts, but more complicated scripts require at least a little coding in VBA.

Comments: I'm a big fan of using e-Tester to test web applications. Not sure why it's not more popular - it should be one of the dominant test automation tools, but it seems to take a back seat to some other tools in terms of popularity, from what I've seen.

Comments: If you are willing to buy a book and teach yourself VBA, this tool will benefit you much more. VBA is probably one of the easiest languages to learn, so it shouldn't take you very long if you have a logical mind and are interested in that type of thing.

Comments: The interface is intuitive and easy to use. Also useful are the graphical representations of the script elements. A very user-friendly and well-designed tool.

Comments: much less expensive than other comparable tools. also, the ability to use the same scripts for functional and load testing is useful and a good time-saver.

Comments: I use e-Tester everyday to do regression testing on a J2EE web application that my firm is developing. e-Tester works very well, especially if you know enough VBA to customize the scripts. You don't have to be a VBA guru, it's enough if you know the basics since you can build your knowledge as you go along. Although it works well for J2EE apps, I would not recommend it for testing client-server software.
