IBM Rational
Functional Tester, formerly known as XDE Tester, is a testing tool that
allows users to record, edit, and execute automated functional test scripts. As
part of the Rational software suite, it integrates with Rational TestManager, which can store, schedule, and capture the results of the
Functional Tester scripts selected for execution. Users create and
modify the test scripts using either Java or Visual Basic .NET, so some
programming knowledge and experience is essential. Functional tester
was designed to test Java, .NET, and Web applications, not client-server
applications. However, an add-on allows users to also create scripts
for testing 3270/5250 terminal-based applications. Functional Tester
recognizes GUI objects in the application under test through the
creation and use of an Object Map, which is basically a collection of
properties about each object used in a script. This Object Map can be
shared among many test scripts, so that when a change is made to a GUI
object, only the Object Map will need to be changed, not all of the
scripts. Since GUI objects are recognized by their properties, the test
scripts will not require modification if the screen layout of the
application under test changes and the GUI controls are repositioned.
Functional Tester also includes wizards to help add verification points
and dynamic data to test scripts.

Name: Chaitanya Kiran Date: Friday, March 19, 2010 Rating: Comments: Functional Tester a powerful tool for executing regression suites. A very little Java knowledge is required, it will not take much time. Coming to the plus points it has multiple datapool accessing, reuseablity of test objects, programming ablities like incrementing required data, iterative and loop coding and so on..
Name: Testing Guru Date: Wednesday, February 11, 2009 Rating: Comments: Only useful in the hands of an experienced tester. Main programming language is Java, which requires more programming knowledge than is really necessary (have to be an OO programmer to use). I can do that, but some members of the team cannot. Offers VB.NET, which is a bit easier (IMO), but that means i have to buy VS.

its really a tough tool for a beginner. we need prog. knowledge more.initially i faced so many issues since i was new to java language
Name: Andy Date: Friday, August 10, 2007 Rating: Comments: It is a good tool but has limitations where you cannot run a script from where you want to,have to start from the beginning or comment the previous lines which is a pain
Name: Paul H. Date: Friday, March 31, 2006 Rating: Comments: This is one of the better testing applications available, especially if your organization already uses some of the other IBM/Rational products, like Requisite Pro and ClearCase. FT also includes a version of ClearCase with fewer features than the standard, separately-purchased one.
Name: Alfred R. Date: Thursday, March 30, 2006 Rating: Comments: With Functional Tester, you have your choice of IDE's - you can use either Eclipse or MS Visual Studio, depending on your preference. This is useful since these environments have a bunch of features that can help you develop robust test scripts in Java or VB. As others have mentioned, I would also recommend that users have some programming experience in their past, or else a high aptitude for learning such skills on their own or through a course.
Name: Matthew Date: Wednesday, March 29, 2006 Rating: Comments: You should learn either Java or Visual Basic before using Functional Tester. You'll need experience with these programming languages in order to be able to customize the test scripts your record. The debugger in FT is a useful feature, but the error messages it displays are not always accurate, so you should have some knowledge on how to debug code on your own.
Name: Christopher Date: Wednesday, March 29, 2006 Rating: Comments: Functional Tester integrates with ClearCase, so that you can implement version control for automated test scripts. This can be useful because you can still execute tests that were created for previous versions of the application being tested, if necessary.
Name: Suresh P. Date: Wednesday, March 29, 2006 Rating: Comments: i've been using functional tester for about 2 years. it is an effective tool given that the users have the training and experience to utilize it properly. the object map functionality is especially useful as it allows us to minimize the effects of GUI layout changes on our test scenarios.
Name: Darren T. Date: Tuesday, March 28, 2006 Rating: Comments: I use Functional Tester with the Siebel extension to create and run tests for a customized Siebel CRM system. FT does a good job of recognizing the Siebel forms and controls and allows the creation of complex automated test scenarios.
Name: Aaron Date: Tuesday, March 28, 2006 Rating: Comments: One useful feature is that this tool allows you to customize scripts in either one of two languages - Java or VB .NET. The easier one to learn is definitely VB, Java takes much more time, at least it did for me. But the choice is one that most other similar tools do not offer.
Name: Nils N. Date: Tuesday, March 28, 2006 Rating: Comments: one of the big disadvantges of this product is that you need Java or VB programming skills to really get any significant use out of it. i don't have the time to learn either of those languages, and it's not really something i have any interest in doing.
Name: Stephen C. Date: Monday, March 27, 2006 Rating: Comments: I use FT to test an enterprise J2EE application. It is a somewhat expensive product for my organization, but I have to say that it is quite effective. I have software programming experience, and I have observed that it was much easier to create advanced automated test scripts than it was for other testers who had no such background.
