WinRunner is one of the market leaders when it comes to automated
functional testing tools. When used to create automated test scripts, it uses a
“GUI Map” approach, which basically means that it recognizes objects like
buttons and edit fields by their unique properties. WinRunner can be used to
create automated scripts for applications created using a range of technologies,
including Java, Siebel, PowerBuilder, and Delphi. However, some of the add-ins
that provide this support much be purchased separately. Though simple scripts
may be created using WinRunner’s record-and-playback functionality, to develop
any significantly complex test scripts the user will have to utilize Mercury’s
Test Script Language, or TSL, which is basically a derivative of the C
programming language. Therefore, if the user has previous programming
experience, he or she will learn how to use WinRunner much faster than someone
who does not have a programming background. WinRunner integrates with Mercury’s
TestDirector offering, which is one of the market leaders in test management software.
When used together, WinRunner executes automated tests and TestDirector stores
the results, as well as the automated test scripts themselves. Mercury has
suggested that it will add new functionality less quickly to WinRunner than it
will to its QuickTest Professional offering going forward. The company cannot
stop supporting WinRunner due to its large user base, but it looks like the firm
will recommend QuickTest for new customers that use newer software
development platforms.

Name: Developer with testing experience Date: Friday, December 28, 2007 Rating: Comments: I have used WinRynner for testing some Java applications. This tool doesn't recognize all object inside the application, even if you have installed Java Add-in. No documentation about testing Web - applications. I think this tool is not good and it doesn't cost to spend money for its purchasing.
Just, awful (very bad) tool for testing Web applications!!

Name: James Bryant Date: Thursday, August 30, 2007 Rating: Comments: If you want to spend your time programming it is a great way to spend it. However you want to spend your time testing then Original's TestDrive is vastly superior and requires only a short learning curve and can be used by everyone in our (large) QA team. Handles everything we throw at it from old VB, new .Net to Ajx web apps. The latest update also has great support for manual testing.

I do understand how our applications work and want to automate some sceanrios. I have just been trying TestDrive which is much easier to use. I can create the test in a few minutes and they just work. Very easy to change too.

Name: jo.a Date: Friday, March 23, 2007 Rating: Comments: An excellent tool if you want to perform more robust and indepth testing in either mainframe or web. The key is in custom script writing. My web regression test suite was more robust and had more coverage than those written in QTP. It is all in the custom script. I found it can even be used in .NET, again custom scripts.

Name: Todd H Date: Monday, December 18, 2006 Rating: Comments: Had used WinRunner exclusively for many years. It has been an excellent tool and was able to solve pretty much any issue I encountered. It is helpful to have a general understanding of programming concepts to be able to do some extensive work with the tool but it can be grasped relatively easily and the training offered is helpful. It does have some difficulty with more than basic web items unless you really write some custom code but I understand that is why QTP was released. It is a little pricey but the ROI can be significant if used properly and even moreso in conjunction with some of their other tools.

Name: Philip Date: Friday, August 04, 2006 Rating: Comments: Mercury WinRunner is an awesome automated GUI-testing tool. I've been using it at my company for about six months, and for those with the technical ability to utilize WinRunner to its capacity, the tool is a godsend. Requires some programming knowledge, but that's why it's so flexible.
I've been asked to evaluate multiple tools, and this one is definitely at the top.

Name: kaumil Date: Thursday, July 06, 2006 Rating: Comments: This is a nice tool but expensive as well. Also manier times, it fails to identify GUI objects and needs training to become expert. Instead of this, you can have open source software performing in similar ways.

Name: Nick C. Date: Friday, March 31, 2006 Rating: Comments: This is a powerful tool and my organization finds it very useful. But mMake sure your company is willing to spend the money to send the users to training before buying it. This is one of those tools where classroom training is pretty much essential, in my opinion. Luckily, there are a number of vendors that offer the training in my area.
Name: Terrence Date: Thursday, March 30, 2006 Rating: Comments: Works okay most of the time with web apps, but I would recommend using QuickTest Professional with web applications based on newer technologies such as J2EE or .NET. WinRunner is an older tool (although there have been recent releases) and more useful for client-server software.
Name: Frank Date: Thursday, March 30, 2006 Rating: Comments: Here's a tip: Get some practical experience on your own with WinRunner before you go to classroom training. This applies for most things, but especially for this tool. You;ll get a lot more out of the training, and you;ll retain more as well.
Name: Randy P. Date: Thursday, March 30, 2006 Rating: Comments: My team bought WinRunner thinking it was the solution to our testing woes. But it has been "shelfware" for the past year. The learning curve is high if you don't have programming experience. Oru problem is all of our coders are developing the application my group needs to test - none are available to create the automated scripts in WR.
Name: Kelly H. Date: Wednesday, March 29, 2006 Rating: Comments: i agree with the previous post that it is expensive, but Mercury does offer a number of licensing optionns that can help bring down the cost if that is something important to your organization.
Name: James Date: Wednesday, March 29, 2006 Rating: Comments: Expensive licenses - there are less expensive tools out there that work almost as well, depending on the specific type of application you want to create automated scripts for.
Name: Ronald P. Date: Tuesday, March 28, 2006 Rating: Comments: Integrates well with TestDirector to track test results and record defects.
Name: Jonathan Date: Tuesday, March 28, 2006 Rating: Comments: This is a useful tool. I like the functionality of the GUI Map. Scripts are still usable after the interface of the application you are testing changes. Instead of having to make modifications to each test script, if you use the Global GUI map, you only have to make changes to each object once for your entire test suite.
Name: Edwin C. Date: Tuesday, March 28, 2006 Rating: Comments: One of the nice things about WinRunner is how you can schedule the automated tests to run overnight, when no one is on the system. So I can set the schedule before I leave for work, and then when get return in the morning, I am able to view the results.
Name: Michelle Date: Monday, March 27, 2006 Rating: Comments: Takes a bit of classroom or on-the-job training, but once you get the hang of it, it is a powerful tool. I use it to test a legacy system, and it works well for this task.
Name: Mahesh Date: Monday, March 27, 2006 Rating: Comments: This is probably one of the most widely used automated testing tools available. It is also very powerful - if you know what you are doing with it. Since advanced use requires effective programming skills, this application is not for everyone. It is most effectively used by someone who already has programming experience or has the ability to learn that skill on the job. In the hands of someone like this, WinRunner can be used to efficiently reduce the risk from defects in software under development.
